Straw Bale Houses
The first ever pair of semi-detached, two-storey properties built with straw bales as the load bearing structural element. This challenging project incorporated a whole range of environmentally-sound products. The project included the traditional use of lime concrete, mortar and render, hazel stakes for the bales and sheep's wool insulation, alongside modern technologies, including solar heating, engineered timber joists and triple-glazed high-performance windows. During the build there were many organised visits and courses on straw bale building and lime rendering, making this much more than a building project.
